Operating Safety Cases

 Drone Delivery

Extended Operations

Traditional drone operation is restricted to VLOS (Visual Line of Sight) operation.

This restriction is not based on the technical capabilities of the drones, but on safety, as it is easier for a remote pilot to deconflict with other airspace users or uninvolved people on the ground if they can visually see them. However, BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) flights are needed to get the full benefits from drone operation.  For example, drone deliveries, aerial surveying, aerial infrastructure inspections or intelligence gathering become more beneficial and economically viable when more distance can be covered in one flight, and even more when no remote pilot is required on site.
In the UK, to get permission for such extended drone operation, the drone operator needs to submit an Operating Safety Case to the UK CAA. The process is described in CAP722 version 2 and the submission requires 3 volumes: the first one covers the drone operator ConOps (Concept of Operations), the second one is based on the UAS to be used for this ConOps, and the third one explains the risk assessment and mitigations that the drone operator has put in place for the ConOps to happen at a safety risk that the UK CAA will deem acceptable and ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Possible). Drone operators can write their own Operating Safety Cases with or without help from companies offering these services.

We found that we can greatly help with this process, either by providing specific in-depth knowledge of the UA system needed for Volume 2 or for the whole process.

EVLOS / BVLOS OPERATION

Some areas of the world are difficult to reach by roads. Drones offer a fast alternative as they can travel over mountains, rough terrains or water in a straight line at speed up to 15m/s. They offer a green alternative to typically used combustion engine vehicles that are known to contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

With long flight endurance and the ability to fly in wide environmental conditions, the Dark Matter range of aircraft allows for a range of paylaods to be carried at a useful distance.

DROPPING OF ARTICLES

Legislation for using drones in urban deliveries is evolving at pace but it is still not common or straight forward to get such permission. Most projects are still at the R&D phase. Drones present a lot of advantages for urban deliveries: they do not get stuck in traffic and only need a small area to take-off from and land. As their batteries are rechargeable, they are eco-friendly and easy to manage.

With large payload capacity, the Dark Matter range of aircraft allows for a range of paylaod containers to be carried, alongside added safety features required for Operational Safety Cases.

AIRCRAFT CAPABILITIES

The Dark Matter hX has been used successfully  in a number of R&D projects, notably in a project with the NHS where epipens were delivered
on  a 10km round trip at a cruising speed of 12m/s.

The aim of the study conducted in 2020 was to investigate the potential benefits, risks, and impact of drone transportation on  the stability of adrenaline.

USE CASES

The Dark Matter range of products couples a large choice of easily attachable and detachable payloads with the ability to fly in wide environmental conditions, on free flight or on tether.

This can be useful not only for medical emergency situations but also for hard to reach locations where items need to be delivered for regular maintenance.
